Early voting has begun for the June 14 special election for CD34 open (Lean R) and continues through June 10.

The special election is being conducted in CD34 as it has been configured for the past decade, not as it is configured for the 2022 primary and general elections. As a result, U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-McAllen), the Democratic nominee for the seat who currently represents CD15 (Toss Up), is not a candidate in the special election. Two Democrats filed for the seat: Harlingen city service director Rene Coronado and former Cameron Co. Comm. Dan Sanchez. If either candidate wins, he could only serve out the remainder of former U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela’s (D-Brownsville) term. The same is true for one of the two Republicans in the race: McAllen nurse Juana Cantu-Cabrera.

The other Republican in the race is Los Indios respiratory care practitioner Mayra Flores, who won the Republican nomination for a full term in the March primary with 60% of the vote. If she were to win the special election, she would run in the general election as an incumbent seeking re-election.

The candidates’ pre-special election campaign finance reports are due Thursday.
