Special Election and Endorsement News for April 12

CD34 special (Lean R): Ahead of tomorrow’s (Wednesday’s) filing deadline, three candidates have filed:

  • South Padre Island nurse Juana Cantu-Cabrera (R), who finished fourth in the March primary with 7% of the vote
  • Los Indios respiratory care practitioner Mayra Flores (R), winner of the March primary with 60% of the vote; and
  • Harlingen attorney and former Cameron Co. Comm. Dan Sanchez (D).

College Station program specialist Gregory Kunkle Jr., who finished third in the Republican primary with 11% of the vote, is expected to file for the special election. Anyone other than Flores who wins this special election will be able to serve in Congress only until January 2023 unless they mount a successful write-in candidacy in November.

HD12 (Safe R): Rep. Steve Toth (R-The Woodlands) endorsed challenger Ben Bius in the runoff over Rep. Kyle Kacal (R-College Station).

HD63 open (Likely R): Associated Republicans of Texas PAC endorsed Ben Bumgarner (R) in the runoff over Jeff Younger.

HD73 open (Safe R): Associated Republicans of Texas PAC endorsed Barron Casteel (R) in the runoff over Carrie Isaac.

HD122 open (Likely R): Associated Republicans of Texas PAC endorsed Elisa Chan (R) in the runoff over Mark Dorazio.

HD133 open (Likely R): Associated Republicans of Texas PAC endorsed Mano DeAyala (R) in the runoff over Shelly Barineau.
